Rosas Jr. submits Covington in 43 seconds at Hype Italy

UFC bantamweight, a late replacement for Dillon Danis, chokes the former interim welterweight champion in Rome

ROME — UFC bantamweight Raul Rosas Jr. submitted Colby Covington with a rear-naked choke 43 seconds into their 10-minute, submission-only grappling main event at Hype Italy on Tuesday. Some outlets rounded the time to 40 seconds. Rosas took the match on about three days' notice, after Dillon Danis withdrew with an injury. Rosas was in the audience at Sunday's press conference when the promoter asked for a volunteer. He hit a takedown, took the back and finished the choke despite a large weight gap. Covington is a former interim UFC welterweight champion who now competes in Real American Freestyle wrestling. He said afterward that he had not done jiu-jitsu in years. He next wrestles Khamzat Chimaev for the RAF title in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 14, and has a Hype match against Ignacio Bahamondes on Dec. 20. Rosas said his goal is to become the youngest UFC champion.

Why it mattersA 135-pound MMA prospect's quick submission of a much larger, decorated wrestler is the week's biggest crossover upset in grappling, and it comes just before Covington's Chimaev bout.

UPDATEDakar Youth Olympic judo closes with Brazilian and Lithuanian golds

Three-day tournament ends after Germany, Slovenia and Kazakhstan won on day two

DAKAR — Judo at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games ended Tuesday, with Clarisse Vallim of Brazil winning the women's 78 kg title and Tajus Babaicenko of Lithuania taking the men's 100 kg gold, according to the International Judo Federation. The day-two golds had gone to Germany's Reinhold at 63 kg, Slovenia's Cebulj at 81 kg and Kazakhstan's Supygaliyeva at 52 kg, with silvers for India, Iran and Portugal. Day one produced Azerbaijani and Turkish golds. It also gave Jordan its first Olympic-stage judo medal, a silver for Houda Wshah. Matar Diop won bronze at 66 kg, the host nation Senegal's first medal of the Games in any sport. The IJF said the officiating team was gender-balanced for the first time at an international event. IOC President Kirsty Coventry visited on day two.

Why it mattersThe Youth Games show which judo nations are developing talent, and the IJF is using the event to promote the sport's Olympic profile.

Ex-student accuses jiu-jitsu champion AJ Agazarm of grooming after arrest

No charges filed over September burglary arrest; the allegations are unproven and he is presumed innocent

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. — AJ Agazarm, the 2014 IBJJF World No-Gi black belt champion and 2017 ADCC silver medalist, faces a public accusation from a former student that he groomed her. BJJ outlets reported it this week, following his Sept. 22 arrest on suspicion of residential burglary in Ventura County, California. Sheriff's records show he was booked that evening, posted $50,000 bail and was released the next day. The Ventura County District Attorney has filed no charges. The 24-year-old woman says she dated Agazarm from May 2023 to December 2025, beginning when she was 19 and he was 35. She also alleges abuse, which is her claim and has not been tested in court. She says hidden-camera footage shows a masked intruder, and that the property was her family home. A temporary restraining order was issued Sept. 28. Gracie Barra says it ended its affiliation with Agazarm in July 2026, before the arrest.

Why it mattersThe case tests how jiu-jitsu's academy and affiliation system responds to abuse allegations involving a prominent instructor, though nothing has been proven.

Grappling champion Ruotolo gets MMA title shot against ONE's Christian Lee Friday

Two-division champion defends lightweight belt in Bangkok against a challenger with two pro MMA fights

BANGKOK — ONE Championship holds The Inner Circle 37 on Friday, Nov. 6, at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok. In the main event, two-division champion Christian Lee defends the lightweight MMA title against Tye Ruotolo, ONE's welterweight submission grappling champion. Ruotolo is 2-0 in MMA, and both wins came by submission. One of them was a rear-naked choke of Lee's younger brother Adrian, which handed Adrian his first pro loss. Ruotolo, 23, predicts he will finish Lee within a couple of rounds, probably by submission. Lee, 18-4, says he intends to wear down an opponent who has never fought five rounds. ONE's own materials say Ruotolo's grappling belt is not at stake. The card is billed as a member-access event, and ONE Friday Fights 177 follows the same evening.

Why it mattersThe bout tests whether an elite grappler can skip the usual MMA apprenticeship and win a world title in his third fight.

Whittaker to fight Guskov in Sydney co-main as Salkilld gets first home headliner

UFC's Feb. 6 Fight Night in Australia now has two main-card bouts booked

SYDNEY — The UFC has built out its Feb. 6 Fight Night in Sydney. Australian lightweight Quillan Salkilld, 26, headlines against Benoit Saint-Denis in a five-round fight. Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker co-headlines against light heavyweight Bogdan Guskov. Whittaker, 35, fights in his hometown for the first time since 2014. He is coming off a third-round TKO of Nikita Krylov in his light heavyweight debut in July. Guskov, 34, has finished all 18 of his pro wins. He is coming off a fifth-round TKO loss to Magomed Ankalaev. Salkilld is unbeaten in the UFC and recently submitted Mateusz Gamrot. Saint-Denis is coming off a submission loss to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 329. The card also includes the Road to UFC featherweight and bantamweight finals.

Why it mattersIt sets up a home-soil test for Whittaker's light heavyweight run and gives Salkilld his first main event in Australia.

Pereira books first post-UFC fight in Korea; Barboza returns under hybrid rules
Bloody Elbow: Pereira books first fight since UFC exit

Pereira books first post-UFC fight in Korea; Barboza returns under hybrid rules

Ex-UFC fighters land on regional and special-rules cards after exits earlier this year

INCHEON, South Korea — Michel Pereira will face In Soo Hwang on Dec. 19 at ZFN 5 in Incheon, South Korea. The promotion belongs to Chan Sung Jung, known as the Korean Zombie, and the card streams on UFC Fight Pass. Pereira, 33, left the UFC with a 10-6 record. He had lost four of his last five fights there. His final UFC bout was a decision loss to Shara Magomedov, in which Magomedov repeatedly grabbed his hair and referee Herb Dean took no points. Pereira has argued the result was compromised. Hwang is 9-2, with seven knockouts among his nine wins, and was on last year's Contender Series. Separately, Edson Barboza, who retired after 33 UFC fights, has booked a return to combat sports three months after retiring. The rules allow strikes.

Why it mattersThe bookings show where released UFC names are landing and whether Pereira's decline was about opposition or something else.
