Taylor claims narrow win over Pearson in redrawn 9th District
Action News 5: Taylor declares victory in narrow race

UPDATETaylor claims narrow win over Pearson in redrawn 9th District

Republican leads by about 1 point with 99% of precincts in; Democrat says he is not conceding

MEMPHIS — Republican state Sen. Brent Taylor declared victory late Tuesday in the redrawn 9th Congressional District. WREG reported that, with 99% of precincts counted, he led Democratic state Rep. Justin J. Pearson by roughly 2,500 votes, 49.6% to 48.5%. Independent Dennis Clark drew about 1.1%, according to NBC's tally. Pearson says he is not conceding, and the results remain unofficial. The seat opens after Rep. Steve Cohen's 19 years in office. Tennessee Republicans redrew it in a May special session after the U.S. Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais ruling weakened the Voting Rights Act. It now runs from Memphis through rural West and Middle Tennessee. Pearson has not announced his next step, and the state's official count is still to come.

Why it mattersThe Memphis-based seat had been held by a Democrat for more than 50 years, and its outcome tests the May redistricting.

Bail-limit amendment also passes; Green was her party's first woman nominee for governor

NASHVILLE — Republican U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn declared victory in Tennessee's governor's race, and the Washington Post projected her the winner shortly before 1 a.m. Eastern. A partial tally posted by Action News 5 showed Blackburn with 950,259 votes (45.4%) and Memphis City Council member Jerri Green, the Democratic nominee, with 902,546 (43.1%). The ballot also carried independents including David Hatley. Green had campaigned on affordability, schools and a pause on new data centers. She also said she would remove soldiers from Memphis streets. The Action News 5 report also said Constitutional Amendment 1, which expands courts' power to deny bail, passed. Counts were still unofficial and incomplete when reported.

Why it mattersMemphis's Memphis Safe Task Force, school takeover and data-center fights now meet a governor-elect who is a Republican.

UPDATECharter referendums on Memphis ballot appear headed for passage

Changes include union rights for library employees and revisions to City Council rules

MEMPHIS — Memphis voters appeared poised Tuesday night to approve changes to the city charter, according to the Daily Memphian. The referendums include allowing Memphis Public Library employees to unionize, along with changes affecting the City Council. Early returns on the Shelby County Election Commission's unofficial results page listed the measures by ordinance number, 5966, 5977 and 5978. The Decision Desk tracker showed Yes leading on all three, though that early count was only partial. The county election commission has scheduled further sessions on Nov. 17 and Nov. 23. Results are unofficial until certified. The council's own agenda shows it back in session next week, with a data-center vote possible Nov. 10.

Why it mattersThe amendments would rewrite how city employees organize and how the council operates, with no further vote needed once certified.
