Memphis enters final election week under a map that splits it three ways
Early voting ends Thursday as Cohen backs Pearson and a congressional candidate is hurt in a crash
MEMPHIS — Early voting for the Nov. 3 general election closes Thursday, Oct. 29. Memphis voters will cast ballots under a new congressional map that divides the city among three districts. A Daily Memphian opinion piece by Church Health founder G. Scott Morris argues the lines were drawn for political purposes and split neighborhoods that share streets, schools and churches. The same paper's political roundup says U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen gave state Rep. Justin Pearson a "Yellow Dog" endorsement. It adds that Jerri Green voted early and that Mayor Paul Young is promoting violence-intervention work separate from the federal task force. Heidi Kuhn, the former criminal court clerk running for Congress, was hurt in a Memphis car crash and is expected to recover. The Tennessee Press Association holds a governor-candidate forum Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Why it mattersThe new three-way split of Memphis is reshaping who represents the city in Washington, with the vote eight days away.
