IBJJF Crown fields set for Nov. 8 in Long Beach
IBJJF: 2026 Crown Andy Murasaki Returns for Third Crown Title

IBJJF Crown fields set for Nov. 8 in Long Beach

Murasaki chases a third title and Munis a fourth as the Vetoraci twins enter separate brackets

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The IBJJF has filled the fourth Crown, a one-night, invitation-only event set for Nov. 8 at the Long Beach Pyramid. The federation lists 48 competitors, with eight in each bracket and $20,000 to each division winner. FloGrappling will stream it. Andy Murasaki, who moved to Art of Jiu-Jitsu this year, will defend his middleweight title. He faces Mica Galvao, Tarcisio Santos, Jackson Nagai, Leo Souza, Jose Steve, Uanderson Ferreira and Rafael Gamba. Ultra-heavyweight champion Erich Munis accepted the last invitation in his division. He is chasing a fourth straight Crown. Twins Davi and Matheus Vetoraci are entered at heavyweight and ultra-heavyweight, so they cannot meet. First-round pairings had not been released in the event guide as of the latest reports.

Why it mattersThe Crown is the IBJJF's richest invitational and a gauge of how the federation competes with pro promotions for top black belts.

UPDATEAbu Dhabi Grand Slam field grows to 397 judoka from 61 nations

IJF calendar shows a larger entry than the earlier 293-athlete list as Olympic-qualifying points draw teams

ABU DHABI — The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam opens Thursday with a bigger field than earlier entry lists showed. The IJF calendar now shows 397 athletes from 61 nations. The judoka list on the same site had counted 293 athletes from 45 countries. The three-day event runs Oct. 29-31. Local reports say IJF President Marius Vizer praised the Emirates federation's preparations and called the meet the penultimate stop of the 2026 World Judo Tour. They add that more than 60 national teams are competing for ranking points toward the next Olympic Games. The Emirates federation has said the tournament gives its national team another chance to earn qualifying points. Tokyo's Grand Slam closes the circuit in December. World Judo Day falls on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Why it mattersLate-season ranking points shape Olympic qualification, and a larger field raises the value of a Grand Slam medal.

No-gi Open runs on ADCC rules; FloGrappling streamed the day

RICHMOND, B.C. — ADCC Canada staged its Vancouver Open on Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Smoothcomp event page listed 539 registered athletes. The event was no-gi only and used ADCC rules and legal techniques. Divisions were double elimination, with a match for third place and no shared bronze. Medalists earn ADCC Open points, awarded as nine for gold, three for silver and one for bronze. FloGrappling streamed the event, and match clips from the day, including Fontaine-Costain and Mo-Connelly, were posted. Division winners were not confirmed at the time of writing. The ADCC says Canadian Open results serve as tiebreakers when it picks invitees to its Youth World Championship. The next Open on FloGrappling's calendar is ADCC Latinoamerica in Caracas.

Why it mattersADCC Opens are the feeder system for the sport's most prestigious no-gi title, which was last decided in Krakow in September.

Volkanovski stops unbeaten Evloev in round two at UFC 333

The 38-year-old featherweight champion drops the challenger with punches and finishes him on the ground in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI — Alexander Volkanovski kept the UFC featherweight title on Saturday at Etihad Arena. He stopped previously unbeaten Movsar Evloev at 4:54 of round two. Evloev took him down several times in the first round, but Volkanovski got back up each time. In the second round a right hand staggered the challenger, and ground strikes forced referee Marc Goddard to step in with six seconds left. Volkanovski, 38, improved to 29-4. Evloev fell to 20-1, his first loss in 11 UFC fights. The Associated Press says the ninth featherweight title-fight win ties Jose Aldo for the division record, while other outlets call it a record outright. Volkanovski was a Performance of the Night winner and said he may keep fighting rather than retire. Lone'er Kavanagh, Aaron Pico and Dominick Reyes also won by first-round stoppage on the card.

Why it mattersA 38-year-old champion beating the division's top contender with a finish strengthens his claim as the best featherweight in UFC history and keeps the title picture open.

CBS Sports: Dana White explains Prates vs. Morales

UPDATEWhite says Makhachev gave no reason for skipping UFC 336; interim belt booked

Prates will meet Morales on Jan. 30 in Toronto for an interim welterweight title while the champion waits until after Ramadan

ABU DHABI — UFC chief Dana White has confirmed what was previously only reported about Islam Makhachev's absence from UFC 336. At the UFC 333 press conference he said the welterweight champion was slated to headline the Jan. 30 card at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, then said he did not want to fight until after Ramadan. Asked for a reason, White said there was none. The UFC instead booked Carlos Prates against Michael Morales for an interim welterweight title as the co-main event. Joshua Van and Manel Kape will headline for the flyweight title. White said the division can't be held up. Ramadan starts Feb. 8, and ESPN reports Makhachev's return could not come before May. Makhachev, who has fought once this year, wrote that he will be back once the real contender is known. Prates responded publicly that he would knock out Morales and then take the belt from Makhachev.

Why it mattersThe UFC's first interim title under a healthy champion shows a promoter and its top pound-for-pound fighter openly at odds over activity and scheduling.

Yan beats Dvalishvili 48-47 on all cards; third-round scoring draws debate

The bantamweight champion rallied from two lost rounds to win the trilogy and keep his title

ABU DHABI — Petr Yan kept the UFC bantamweight title in the UFC 333 co-main event, beating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision with three 48-47 scorecards. All three judges gave Dvalishvili the first two rounds, then gave Yan rounds three through five. Yan's body shots and his defense against takedowns turned the fight over the closing rounds. Yan now leads the series 2-1. The scoring of round three drew criticism from several fighters on social media, and some thought Dvalishvili had won. Others, including Aiemann Zahabi, backed Yan, and Dvalishvili himself said Yan was the better man on the night. The UFC gave both men Fight of the Night bonuses of $100,000. Yan said he would take anybody next.

Why it mattersA close five-round decision that is already a Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year contender also revives the long-running debate over how judges score rounds that swing late.
