Ukraine's Starlink access recovers as Musk says offensive-drone loophole was closed

Ukraine's Starlink access recovers as Musk says offensive-drone loophole was closed

The week-long disruption followed a Trump-announced 'energy ceasefire' that Kyiv says it learned of online

KYIV — Ukraine said its Starlink and Starshield links returned to normal speeds after more than a week of disruption on the front. On Saturday SpaceX chief Elon Musk wrote that the civilian service was never allowed for offensive drone strikes and that a loophole had been closed last week. He also said the front line would collapse if Starlink were switched off entirely, and that decisions on Starshield rest with the U.S. government. President Zelensky said the restored bandwidth quickly helped logistics and counter-drone work. Crisis Group's mid-October briefing links the episode to Washington's 'energy ceasefire' announcement, which Zelensky said he learned of through social media. It reports that the U.S. pressed Kyiv to stop striking Russian refineries or risk losing intelligence sharing. Washington says sharing continues. Zelensky has since announced that refinery attacks will resume, and Ukrainian long-range strikes continued this weekend, including on Belgorod.

Why it mattersUkraine's drone war and air defense depend on U.S.-controlled and privately owned communications, which gives Washington and a company leverage over Kyiv's battlefield choices as winter nears.

Luke 10:38-42

38As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.” …

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Seneca the Younger)

On Tranquility of Mind (De Tranquillitate Animi), titled "Of Peace of Mind" in this translation, Chapter 10 (Stewart's chapter numbering)

Call good sense to your aid against difficulties: it is possible to soften what is harsh, to widen what is too narrow, and to make heavy burdens press less severely upon one who bears them skillfully. Moreover, we ought not to allow our desires to wander far afield, but we must make them confine themselves to our immediate neighbourhood, since they will not endure to be altogether locked up. We must leave alone things which either cannot come to pass or can only be effected with difficulty, and follow after such things as are near at hand and within reach of our hopes, always remembering that all things are equally unimportant, and that though they have a different outward appearance, they are all alike empty within. Neither let us envy those who are in high places: the heights which look lofty to us are steep and rugged.

The Pope Who Put a Corpse on Trial: The Cadaver Synod of 897

In January 897 a pope convicted his dead predecessor, and the aftermath showed how much damage a verdict on the dead could do.

In January 897, in the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the body of Pope Formosus sat propped on a throne. He had been dead about nine months. Pope Stephen VI had ordered him dug up and tried. A deacon was assigned to speak for the corpse, since the accused could not answer for himself.
