France stays at Level 2 as protests, curfews and museum closures hit Paris
State Department reissued its France advisory on Oct. 21 citing unrest and terrorism, without raising the level
PARIS — The State Department reissued its France travel advisory on October 21. The country stays at Level 2, "exercise increased caution," and the stated reasons are terrorism and civil unrest. The department says violence and rioting have occurred in recent weeks and may continue. It tells Americans to stay away from demonstrations and crowds. The U.S. Embassy in Paris had earlier reported partial curfews in some cities after protests turned violent. The Louvre, Musée d'Orsay and Musée Picasso closed on Saturday, October 24, citing security concerns over planned marches. Several central Paris metro stations were also shut that day. Further demonstrations have been announced for early November. Flights to French airports are reported to be operating, and no official guidance tells Americans to cancel trips. Travelers are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
Why it mattersThanksgiving and holiday Europe bookings are being made now, and a Level 2 rating leaves the cancel-or-go decision to travelers and their insurers.
