Israelis vote in election that may not settle who governs

Netanyahu's bloc trails in most polls but neither camp is projected to reach 61 seats

JERUSALEM — Israelis voted Tuesday in the first national election since the Hamas-led attacks of Oct. 7, 2023. Polls opened at 7 a.m. at more than 12,000 stations and close at 10 p.m., when exit polls are due. Final pre-election surveys put Gadi Eisenkot's new centrist Yashar party narrowly ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud, with Channel 12 giving Yashar 23 seats to Likud's 21. The pro-Netanyahu Channel 14 shows Likud far ahead at 30. Most polls place Netanyahu's right-wing and ultra-Orthodox bloc at 49 to 55 seats, short of the 61 needed in the 120-seat Knesset. The Jerusalem Post's average of four weekend polls gave the opposition bloc 54 seats to Netanyahu's 49.5. Coalition talks could run for weeks. Haaretz reported public anxiety over what Netanyahu might do before and after the vote.

Why it mattersThe result will shape Israeli policy on Gaza, Iran, Lebanon and the West Bank at a time when several fronts are volatile.

Meditations, Book 7, section 2

How can our principles become dead, unless the impressions [thoughts] which correspond to them are extinguished? But it is in thy power continuously to fan these thoughts into a flame. I can have that opinion about anything which I ought to have. If I can, why am I disturbed? The things which are external to my mind have no relation at all to my mind.—Let this be the state of thy affects, and thou standest erect. To recover thy life is in thy power.

The Book That Describes Its Own Murder: Exeter Book Riddle 26

A thousand-year-old English poem makes a Gospel book narrate how it was made from a slaughtered calf.

Around the year 1000, a scribe copied a large anthology of Old English poetry. It is now called the Exeter Book, and it holds about ninety-four riddles. Their solutions are not written down anywhere, so the reader has to work them out. Riddle 26 is one of the grimmest. The speaker says an enemy took its life and stole its strength. It is a Gospel book, and it is describing its own manufacture.
