Nasdaq slides into correction, VIX jumps to its highest since March, and the Dow gives back its post-election surge
NEW YORK — U.S. stocks fell sharply Thursday as selling in chip and AI-infrastructure shares spread across the market. Investors feared a slower data-center buildout after Democrats won Congress. The S&P 500 dropped 334.89 points, or 4.36%, to 7,353.73. The Nasdaq Composite lost 5.52% to 24,315.00 and closed more than 10% below its record from last month, which is a correction. The Dow fell 1,833.06 points, or 3.44%, to 51,523.06, erasing most of Wednesday's election-day gain. All 11 S&P sectors fell. CNN reported that a chipmaker index dropped 12.3% and Nvidia fell 9.3%, wiping out its gain for the year. The VIX volatility gauge rose roughly 70% to about 28, its highest level since March. Futures were mixed overnight. Investors now turn to Friday's October payrolls report for the next signal.
