Iran says four vessels hit mines on 'unauthorized' routes; Qatari mediators return to Tehran and Houthis claim new attacks on Saudi targets

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said Thursday and Friday that tankers caught fire in and near the Strait of Hormuz after striking mines on routes Tehran calls unauthorized. One was a supertanker carrying more than two million barrels. A separate UKMTO report described limpet mines attached to the Panama-flagged tanker Louise 1 by a small boat. Mine claims are unverified, and maritime security officials have said there is no evidence of mines in the strait. The Wall Street Journal reported that the top U.S. commander in the region briefed President Trump on strike options for after Tuesday's midterms. Vice President Vance is reportedly trying to reopen talks, and Qatari mediators are back in Tehran. Yemen's Houthis claimed new missile attacks on Saudi airports and oil sites. Brent crude topped $117 last week, and Reuters counted at least 28 ship attacks in October by Oct. 23, a monthly record of the war.

Why it mattersA resumption of U.S.-Iran fighting around the Nov. 3 vote would threaten a waterway that normally carries a large share of the world's oil and could widen the war to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

Of Consolation: To Marcia (Ad Marciam de Consolatione), Dialogues Book 6, Chapter 19 (Stewart's chapter numbering; Latin 19.5-6)

Death is neither a good nor a bad thing, for that alone which is something can be a good or a bad thing: but that which is nothing, and reduces all things to nothing, does not hand us over to either fortune, because good and bad require some material to work upon. Fortune cannot take hold of that which Nature has let go, nor can a man be unhappy if he is nothing. Your son has passed beyond the border of the country where men are forced to labour; he has reached deep and everlasting peace.

The Cotton That Did Not Have to Burn: Al-Ghazali on Causation

Around 1095, a theologian argued that fire never burns cotton. His reasoning anticipated Hume by six centuries.

Put a ball of cotton in a flame and it burns. Everyone has seen this, and almost no one thinks it needs explaining. The Persian theologian al-Ghazali (died 1111) chose the example because it seemed so obvious. In The Incoherence of the Philosophers, written around 1095, he used it to attack a view held by followers of Avicenna. On that view, fire necessarily causes burning, because of what fire and cotton are.
