SpaceX posts first profit as public company; Musk floats Tesla merger

AI computing business overtakes Starlink as revenue jumps 161% to $14.6 billion

HAWTHORNE, Calif. — SpaceX reported third-quarter revenue of about $14.6 billion on Tuesday, up 161% from a year earlier and well above analyst forecasts of roughly $12.7 billion. It was the company's first profitable quarter since its June listing. Net income was $4.4 billion and operating income $2.8 billion. The business now called Super Intelligence, which leases computing capacity to customers including Anthropic and Google, brought in $7.56 billion and outweighed Starlink. Starlink subscribers rose to 13.6 million. Shares gained about 8% in after-hours trading. On the earnings call, Elon Musk said a merger with Tesla would be a good idea and that both boards have formed special committees to discuss one. Tesla reports its own third-quarter results after the close today.

Why it mattersA possible SpaceX-Tesla combination would join two of the world's most valuable companies, with large consequences for shareholders, governance and antitrust review.

Quieted, humble contentment

Psalms 131:1-3

1Yahweh, my heart isn’t haughty, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me. 2Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. 3Israel, hope in Yahweh, from this time forward and forever more.

Diogenes Laertius, on Sphaerus of Bosporus

Lives of the Eminent Philosophers (Life of Sphaerus), Book 7, section 177

One day when a discussion had arisen on the question whether the wise man could stoop to hold opinion, and Sphaerus had maintained that this was impossible, the king, wishing to refute him, ordered some waxen pomegranates to be put on the table. Sphaerus was taken in and the king cried out, "You have given your assent to a presentation which is false." But Sphaerus was ready with a neat answer. "I assented not to the proposition that they are pomegranates, but to another, that there are good grounds for thinking them to be pomegranates. Certainty of presentation and reasonable probability are two totally different things." Mnesistratus having accused him of denying that Ptolemy was a king, his reply was, "Being of such quality as he is, Ptolemy is indeed a king."

The Giveaway That Ate the Business: Wrigley's Three Pivots

William Wrigley Jr. started with soap and ended up in gum. He did it by noticing which of his freebies customers wanted more than the product.

In 1891, William Wrigley Jr. arrived in Chicago from Philadelphia with $32. He was 29 and had been a travelling soap salesman since he was 13. His plan was to sell Wrigley's Scouring Soap, a product from his father's line. Soap was a crowded, low-margin trade, so he sweetened each sale with a free gift: a can of baking powder.
